About Me
I am an oil painter based in York, England, born and raised in Yorkshire. I am at the beginning of my artistic practice, which I pursue alongside my work as a mathematics teacher. I work exclusively in oil paint, drawn to its slow, responsive nature and its capacity to hold light, depth, and movement within a single surface.
My paintings explore the shifting relationships between light, colour, and form. Working loosely, I aim to suggest movement and atmosphere rather than fixed description, allowing the paint to remain visibly active. I am particularly interested in painting reflective surfaces, most often through the depiction of silver objects within still-life compositions, using reflection as a means of examining light, distortion, and visual complexity. Alongside my connection to Yorkshire, frequent trips to Italy provide an ongoing source of inspiration, particularly in response to its distinctive light and colour.
I am influenced by the Scottish Colourists and related artists, particularly in their confident use of colour and sensitivity to light.
